February Meeting Recap

We had a great meeting this month!  We had a full house at Cosmic Quilting for the BattyLady.  (Thank You, Karen!)

The Batty Lady provided us with tons of information and samples about batting.  There was a lot of great information.  Visit Alicia's website for more information and products www.battylady.com.

 

We have scheduled a field trip on March 14th.  Our first desination is the Glendale Quilt Show sponsored by the Glendale Quilt Guild and then on to the Man-Made: Contemporary Male Quilters. 

We are planning on meeting somewhere in Costa Mesa around 8:30 am to carpool (exact meeting location to be determined).

Congratulations to Monica for winning the 16 blocks of Block of Circle.  Our next block of the month is from the Bijou Blog: Herringbone.  Looking forward to see all the great blocks and another lucky winner.

What's coming next month - March.

Join us for the first Philanthropy Sew of the year on March 8th at Cosmic Quilting.  We will continue working on our Million Pillowcase Challenge and some other projects in the works.

• Bring a Zip Lock bag of scraps to share for a project during the meeting
• Bloom Challenge is DUE! Anything Quilted, Max. 40 inches with the theme of Blooming Flowers for Spring.

Block of the Month

We are starting a block of the month activity which will get us to try something new. Piece the block at home and bring it to the February meeting. We will draw one winner from everyone who brings in a block, and the winner gets all the blocks. 

It would be great if the winner would make a quilt from the blocks which could be exhibited in a future meeting Show and Tell and/or in a quilt show. The quilt can be donated to one of our philanthropies, or kept.

February's block is a Circle of Squares. The tutorial can be found at the link below. Make it using a solid white background and scrappy print squares.

First Meeting of the New Year - Welcome to 2015!

On Thursday, January 29th we had our first meeting of 2015 and it was action packed!  We accomplished a lot of business and shared some creativity.

We began our meeting with a ice breaker asking members what they would like to see in 2015, here were some of the responses.  Our goal is to make as much of this happen as possible and we are off to a good start:

More workshops

More lectures

Color, Design to create ideas

Work with other guilds to bring in great guest speakers

Block of the month / Skill builder

If someone attends a training session, share topic

Share books and ideas from the book

A challenge of some sort

Anything that we are learning - a teachable item

The Batting Lady

Congratulations to Kaley for having one of her quilts accepted into QuiltCon!  We wish her luck!

Upcoming Events:

• At our February Meeting, we will be hosting The Batting Lady.  She will make a presentation on different types of batting.  Stay tuned for where our meeting will be held, either at Moore's or Cosmic Quilting.  We will let you know.

Road to California Carpool January 24th

The Quilt Show is scheduled to open at 9 am and is open until 6 pm. Is 8am too early too meet?

Philantrophy 2015

The New Year is just around the corner.  I'm excited to begin our philanthropy efforts for 2015.  We have had some suggested for things to do and we are looking into them.  If there is anything you would like us to look into or participate in - just let me know.  (Thank you Karen Alders for making contact with CHOC.)

Currently, we are looking at the following:

• The Million Pillowcase Challenge (see previous blog post for details)
• CHOC - Baby quilts, bed covers to cover incubators and crib mattresses.
• Dimensions 36 X 48 are best.
• There are Precut kits available for their special incubators.
• Sewing Retreat at Choc on February 28th.
• Any other organization to donate quilts.

So keep those donations of material and batting coming.  We are looking forward to another very successful year.

2015 sew dates for philanthropy are as follow:

• Sunday, March 8, 2015
• Sunday, June 14, 2015
• Sunday, September 13, 2015
• At our Holiday Party in December!

Mark your calendar!  Hope to see you there.

And we have already started our efforts.  YAY!!!! 

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you - Philanthropy Efforts in 2014

Once again- I want to thank you everyone for their philanthropy efforts this year.  It was a great year!

 

To recap, in March we presented over 25 quilts to Casa Teresa for those in need of a temporary home and on-going support for pregnant women who are alone. 

 

Thanks to Janet and our members for all of your hard work over the prior 18 months to delivery such beautiful quilts to these mothers.

 



From March through Oct, we worked hard to hit a goal - our goal was to have quilts ready for the holidays for those in need.  And WE DID IT!

We completed 32 quilts in a very short time and 3 local organizations benefited from our efforts - Women's Transitional Living, Inc., Interval House and Human Options.

Each of these organizations help those affected by domestic violence and sexual abuse.

Potluck - Please no red wine.
Comment below to tell us what your bringing for the potluck so we don't wind up with 15 plates of cookies or a whole mess of green beans. :)

What's a Yankee Swap you ask???
Each member makes and wraps a handmade item to swap with other guild members. We'll each pick a number to decide what order the swap goes. The first person selects an item, unwraps it and shows it off. The 2nd person can either steal that item or select a new item. If it is "stolen" from the first person, then the victim gets to select a new item to unwrap. The 3rd person can then steal from #1 or #2 or select a new item. And so on. Once an item is stolen 3 times it is frozen and the person who last has possession is now the proud owner. When all gifts have been opened, the 1st person then has a chance to choose any of the remaining unfrozen items. It's jolly fun! Items made at past meetings have included pillows, bags, placemats, pincushions, hot pads/gloves, baskets, wall hangings, etc. etc. Use your quilty imagination!

If you last minute folks don't have time to make something you can participate in the swap with a quilty inspired gift... just a thought.
