Philanthropy - Let's make it another great year!

I'm excited to make my first post on our new blog as Philanthropy Chair.

First, I want to thank Janet for all of her hard work over the last 18 months.  Not only did she lead us to donate 25 quilts to Casa Teresa in March but organized the process.  I am indebted to her as she hands over the reigns.

Our future opportunities as a guild are endless.  The leadership would like our next donation to go to a Domestic Violence Shelter benefiting women and children in need.  There are 4 shelters in Orange County.  Over the next few months I will be contacting each of them, doing some research on their organization and seeing if we are a good fit.  I will put my finding on our blog and we will then vote as a group to determine who our quilts will go to.  Our target to donate our quilts is the holiday season.

How can you help?
  • Donate fabric, batting, orphan blocks, batting (yes, I listed that twice)
  • Attend our quarterly philanthropy sews (next on is May 18th at Cosmic Quilting)
  • Take Projects Home
  • Do scrap projects at home
What I will bring to meetings each month -
  • A basket to accept all donations
  • Pre-cut kits with pattern and fabric
  • Blocks to be sewn together
  • Tops that need to be sandwich and quilted

Contact me anytime to return, donate, or pick up projects.  Let's continue to give back to our communities with our beautiful quilts.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Call for Entries!

Would you like your quilt or quilts considered for exhibit at International Quilt Festival in Houston, Chicago, and at our new Quilt! Knit! Stitch!™ in Portland, Oregon? Maybe you didn't know that many of the thousands of amazing quilts and textiles we display every year come from our various calls for exhibit entries and our contests. And we're always looking for more amazing quilts. . .maybe yours!

We would like to encourage you and members of the OCMQG to consider entering your work for possible inclusion in one (or many) of our upcoming exhibits.

You can find our most current list of calls for entry at http://www.quilts.com/home/contests/index.php, or just look at the list below.

We would also like to keep you and your guild members up to date on any future Quilt Festival contests and calls for entry. If you are interested in receiving emailed updates, please send Becky your name and email address.

Wouldn't it be great to see OCQMG represented at  the shows?

Weekend Sew
Laguna Hills

Our wonderful new space for our weekend sews is at Cosmic Quilting. Our host, Karen Miller, is super cool and learned to sew as a child from her mother. She's held many positions within the garment industry including making wedding dresses and costumes. Her long arm career began when she made a gigantic king size quilt for a gift and decided her domestic machine wasn't the best tool for the job. Moving recently from the east coast, she started Cosmic Quilting in January 2014 when she took delivery of her Gammill Optimum Plus Statler Stitcher. She's got a technical background too so she can stitch to perfection.

The work space is awesome – big tables, super nice chairs, a cutting and iron station. We had 10+ people at the sew this weekend with some just dropping in to say, "hi" and others staying to work on their quilting projects - including some of the challenge projects coming up. Janet brought a tin of delicious fresh baked cookies and Kathy C. brought a huge basket of oranges from her own fruit trees. I took a few home and had one for lunch today. YUM! and thank you ladies!

Speaking of challenges, if you still need your Michael Miller fabric, please contact Janet Crothers or come to our Monthly Guild Meeting on April 24th at Hoffman Fabrics in Mission Viejo.

If you're in need of Karen's services, you can contact her at 949-281-7728 for a quote.

See ya soon!
