forward to the New Year.
First – Thank you to Sandy for her incredible demo of curved
piecing. Sandy makes it seems so easy
but I think we all want to try it out.
She worked miracles on her machine Thursday night.
Also, thank you to Sue Stone and her friends from Needle in
A Fabric Stash. We are excited about her
modern quilt store in Temecula and we are looking forward to a road trip
soon. (Information to follow) We want to encourage everyone to subscribe to
her emails at http://www.needleinafabricstash.com/
Sue’s 1st year anniversary is coming up on November 7th
and she will have some special deals in the store and online.

larger space to hold our meeting and workshops.

OCMQG August Meeting Recap
Another great meeting at the Orange County Modern Quilt
Guild! More beautiful quilts were shown
and we have made lots of progress on our Quilt Con Charity Quilt.
Thank you to Karen for allowing us to meet at Cosmic
Quilting. She is always such a great hostess.
We started our meeting with a talk from Kathy about her past
sewing experience. She has done a lot of
quilting from Traditional to Art Quilting to Modern. Her pursuit for knowledge of the every
changing quilting method has taken her around the world. We were honored that she shared many quilts
with us. Lastly she talked about her
applique Dresden Plate quilt that we all admired that month. Kathy thirst for her desired results is by
always asking herself “What if…?”
Our challenge quilt for Quilt Con 2016 looked awesome. Thank you to all those who put in so much
work to get the top and back done. Our “Improv with Intent” drew lots of
comments on how to quilt it. Thanks to
Karen and with the help of Susan to quilt it in a Regatta flavor. Given that the quilt looks like sailboats
floating around, our intent may resemble the Disney movie – The Boatniks.
http://video.disney.com/watch/the-boatniks-trailer-4beae8fcda631dc60c94e3f9What do you think?
We are all looking forward to our Thanksgiving challenge. Design and make a quilt based on a book. Everyone will be a winner in this challenge! Material
will be available at our next sew on September 13, 2015 at Cosmic
Quilting. The quilt is due – at the
November 19th meeting.
The Soka University show is coming quickly – September 26th
and 27th. Please contact
Bunnie about volunteering at our booth.
Additionally, if you are displaying a quilt, you will need to add a four
inch sleeve on the back and email Bunnie with the dimensions. bunnie@dbmsoft.com Be sure to bring it to our next meeting or
directly to Soka University.
We are still collecting pillowcases for the million pillowcase
challenge. We were able to add 5 more to
our goal of 100. Come to the sew on the 13th
and we can make more to reach our goal.
Or you can make some from your scraps and follow this tutorial. Pillowcase

July Recap
Happy Friday and the Last Day of July! Can’t believe we are 7 months into 2015. We are already planning our end year
activities, charity quilts and items for Quilt Con 2016 in Pasadena. And we had an exciting night last night with
so many beautiful quilts.
We began the night with our Water Challenge
Competition. We had 6 entries and the
quilts were amazing, beautiful and all capture the essence of water in their
own way. And for the first time in our
guilds history – we had a 3 way tie for 1st! Congrats to Karen, Sandy and Helene! Your quilts were stunning. Thank you to all the participated. And we are looking forward to our next challenge.
Speaking of challenges, we decided last night that our next
challenge will be a very special challenge.
In the spirit of Thanksgiving, our challenge will be a philanthropy
challenge. An opportunity to give back
to the community. The quilt you make for
this challenge will be given to a charity for the holidays and you can still
WIN a prize. The theme is Storybook –
choose a book for a child or a young adult and make a quilt based on the
book. The minimum size 36 x 48. This challenge is due at our NOVEMBER 19th Meeting! (This
is a date change due to the Thanksgiving Holiday) Mark your calendar and your participation in
this incredible opportunity.
Moving on to other Philanthropy items on our agenda, we have
a lot going on. We are up to 80
pillowcase – 20 cases short of our goal.
If you have any at home, bring them to the next meeting. Big thanks to Susan and Cecile for completing
an incubator cover each for Choc. This
project was a bit difficult for us but we will make it up to Choc. We are hoping to donate our quilt submitted
to Quilt Con to Choc for a fundraiser in the future. Additionally, we are working on our Quilt Con
2016 Entry – big thanks to Bunnie and Janet who have made headway on it. Our intent is Flying Geese and we are hoping
to make even more progress our September 13th Sew. We will be working on the back, the binding
and deter the quilting. Your
participation is helpful so we can meet our November deadline.
Thank you to all of you who brought quilts to show at the
Flying Geese Soka University Show. We
are looking forward to show all them in our booth. The Show is September 26th and 27th
with a set up on Friday. I will be
sending out a separate email detailing volunteering for the show and other
particulars.
Items we discussed that you maybe be interested in following
up on:
Future reminders - Our next sew is August 9th
at Cosmic Quilting. Our next meeting is

April Recap
Goodbye April and hello May -
Thanks to everyone who came out to the meeting last night. We had a wonderful speaker, Carole Angel from Sedona, Arizona.
Carole is an art quilter who shared many beautiful quilts that she created. Carole's specialty is painting white Kona fabric and using them for inspiration to create these wonderful quilts pictured.
Carole doesn't use a pattern, goes by photos from her adventures. She uses a variety of paints to create her quilting including fabric paints, oils, pastels, watercolors and Pepeo brand paint. Her technique includes painting the fabric first, using fusible on little pieces, some piecing and 100% cotton batting in multiple layers. She typically quilts in an echo pattern.
Huge thanks go out to Karen of Cosmic Quilting not only for hosting our meeting but setting up this wonderful speaker for our meeting! Carole also donated a significant amount of fabric to our philanthropy. Thanks Carole.
We had a few Show and Tells by our members.

Learning
how to "Permission to quilt"
We are going to take clothing or just our own stash and work organically to create a small quilt top. LUKE will walk the class through a series of steps that will deconstruct and reconstruct fabric into something greater than the sum of its parts. we will be working with abstract forms and learning how to harness fabrics that may be a little outside of the normative quilting oeuvre.
What you Need:
·
two
matching garments or pieces of fabric 1/2 yard or bigger that match and a
contrast fabric that is 1/4 yard or bigger.
·
LUKE suggest
shirts from goodwill if you don't have anything at home you need cut. I would
shy away from stretchy, thick or to slippery, as those are more difficult to
work with.

OCMQG - March Meeting Recap
What is your favorite part of Spring? That's what we asked our members at the meeting this month. Some of the things us quilters like about Spring are the longer days, the beautiful gardens with brighter flowers, things seem fresh and clean, children playing outside, and yummy summer fruit.
We have a winner to our "BLOOM" challenge - Susan. Congratulations and enjoy your gift certificate to Cosmic Quilting.
We got a Philanthropy update from Bunnie. We are up to 45 pillowcases - Woohoo! Additionally, Bunnie distributed 4 quilt kits from Choc - looking forward to getting those back. And Sharon graciously agreed to bind our Christmas Quilt that Karen quilted.

Block of the Month
We
are starting a block of the month activity which will get us to try something
new. Piece the block at home and bring it to the February meeting. We will draw
one winner from everyone who brings in a block, and the winner gets all the
blocks.
It
would be great if the winner would make a quilt from the blocks which could be
exhibited in a future meeting Show and Tell and/or in a quilt show. The quilt
can be donated to one of our philanthropies, or kept.
February's
block is a Circle of Squares. The tutorial can be found at the link below. Make
it using a solid white background and scrappy print squares.
